Questions for Your Surgeon
Your consultation is the perfect time to ask a prospective surgeon about qualifications and what you can expect when you have breast enhancement surgery in New Jersey. Below are 10 questions Dr. Sorokin thinks every woman interested in cosmetic breast surgery should ask of the surgeons she is considering.
Dr. Sorokin is more than happy to answer these and other questions in more detail when you meet with him person. Request a consultation at his cosmetic surgery office, conveniently located in Cherry Hill.
1. Where do you perform surgery?
Dr. Sorokin performs breast enhancement procedures like breast enlargement surgery in New Jersey at Centennial Surgical Center or at Virtua West Jersey Hospital Voorhees. Centennial Surgical Center has received the highest level of accreditation by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Healthcare, Inc. Virtua Voorhees is fully approved by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).
2. Who provides anesthesia for your patients?
Anesthesia may be administered by the doctor or by a specially-trained anesthesiologist. Dr. Sorokin works with select anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists who understand the needs of cosmetic surgery patients based on safety and the quick, comfortable recovery needed by cosmetic surgery patients. Safety is Dr. Sorokin's first and foremost priority.
3. What should I expect in terms of recovery?
Recovery is typically 2 to 3 days to begin most activities. Rapid recovery breast augmentation is no longer a myth – new technology, equipment, and refined techniques have advanced breast enlargement to the point that rapid return to daily activities is possible.
4. Are there any medical tests (labs/mammograms/X-rays) that need to be obtained before surgery?
Routine bloodwork will be completed for all cosmetic surgery patients. Women over 35 years old should have a baseline mammogram before breast surgery. Chest radiographs are routinely obtained for patients who smoke or are over 40 years old.
5. What surgeries do you perform most often?
Dr. Sorokin routinely performs breast enlargement, liposuction, Smartlipo™ laser liposuction, and abdominoplasty/tummy tucks. Mommy makeovers combining breast and body procedures are particularly common at Delaware Valley Plastic Surgery, where the focus is on breast and body procedures.
6. What if my implants need to be replaced or removed? Are there warranties?
Breast implants do come with warranties and extended warranties are available from the implant manufacturers. Unfortunately, even the extended warranties do not cover all potential problems. Future costs are a possibility not only for surgery but also for screening MRI exams if needed. Rare complications of surgery may not be covered by health insurance and insurance carriers may have exclusions for patients with implants. Dr. Sorokin encourages patients to ask any staff member at Delaware Valley Plastic Surgery for more information regarding these issues.
7. What are the potential complications?
The biggest potential long term complication of breast augmentation is capsular contracture. Hardening of the implants may cause change in the feeling of the implants, change in size/shape/position of the implant, and even pain. Surgery to fix this complication is unfortunately common. Leakage of implants (both saline and silicone) also can require future surgery. Short term complications include infection, bleeding, and asymmetries. Changes in nipple sensation and function need to be considered. A detailed consent form discussing the most common complications will be discussed with all patients prior to surgery.
8. Do you recommend postoperative implant massage?
Implant massage is extremely important, as Dr. Sorokin believes it helps decrease the long-term rate of capsular contracture. All of Dr. Sorokin's New Jersey breast enhancement patients will receive detailed massage instructions, including diagrams. In addition, these important techniques will be demonstrated for you during the recovery process.
9. What is the cost of breast enhancement? What all is included in that price?
The cost for breast enhancement depends on many individual factors. Costs generally range from $5,500 to $8,500. Dr. Sorokin gives patients an accurate quote for their surgery on the day of consultation. These prices include surgeon's fee, anesthesia, implant cost, and operating room expenses. All fees are explicitly discussed with patients by a staff member of Delaware Valley Plastic Surgery. Pre-surgery tests and post-op complications may be considered "cosmetic" by some health insurance plans, creating additional expense for the patient.
10. Do you recommend any homeopathic supplements or vitamins?
Dr. Sorokin recommends a specific regimen of vitamins and recovery supplements. VitaMedica® offers a pre-packaged program for surgical patients including specialized dosages of vitamins and herbs to aid in recovery and minimize bruising. These products are available either through the Delaware Valley Plastic Surgery Skincare Store or at the office.
At Delaware Valley Plastic Surgery, no cosmetic surgery question is too "silly" to ask. If you have questions about breast enhancement surgery, get answers when you request a consultation online or call to come in and talk with Dr. Sorokin about your cosmetic goals.
