Are breast implants safe?
Breast implant safety has been a hot topic off and on since the early 1990s. Today's silicone gel and saline implants have been constructed to maximize patient safety and implant longevity. Women who visit Dr. Sorokin for breast augmentation from Philadelphia and New Jersey want to know what will happen in the case of an implant rupture. With saline implants, the saline (a sterile salt water solution) is harmlessly absorbed by the body. Modern silicone implants are made from a cohesive silicone gel, which will basically hold its shape even if cut in half. The cohesive property of the silicone means that it is much less likely to migrate into other areas of the body should rupture occur. Breast implants are one of the most studied medical devices ever, and both saline and silicone gel implants are approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the majority of women seeking augmentation.
What are some other common risks of breast enlargement?
Possible complications following breast augmentation may include blood clotting or pooling, overly sensitive breasts or loss of sensation in the breasts, and capsular contracture (a hardening of the tissues surrounding the implant). Dr. Sorokin takes steps to guard against the possibility of complications, but believes that all women should know the risks so they can make an informed choice.
Are saline or silicone gel implants right for me?
Breast implant type is often a very personal decision for each woman considering breast augmentation. During your consultation, Dr. Sorokin will perform an examination and may recommend a particular implant type based on your goals and your breast anatomy. It is often up to the patient to decide which implant type is right for her. Most women at Dr. Sorokin's practice now choose silicone gel implants because they prefer the more natural look and feel that silicone provides.
How do I know if I need breast reduction or a breast lift?
Without a physical examination of your breast anatomy, it is impossible to tell exactly what type of breast surgery is right for you. Some women with large breasts are happy to eliminate the sagging that makes their breasts look older, while others are unhappy with the both the large size and shape of their breasts. For these women, breast reduction may make the most sense. Other women with breasts that droop may think that all they need is a breast lift, when in fact breast augmentation will be required to create adequate breast volume and achieve their desired look. Dr. Sorokin will provide you with a professional recommendation when he meets with you in person.
How long will my recovery take?
Recovery after breast enhancement surgery varies with each procedure and is different for each woman. Dr. Sorokin is dedicated to providing his patients with a short, comfortable recovery following breast surgery. In fact, he offers rapid recovery breast augmentation in which women can be back to their normal activities after just a few days. Bruises usually disappear within one week, while swelling may take a few weeks to fully resolve. Scars likely will appear pink and prominent for several months before fading out, though they will never disappear completely. Dr. Sorokin makes an effort to conceal scars whenever possible.
What can I expect during the consultation?
Women often want to learn more about their next step in the breast surgery experience. Your first visit is all about having some time for you and Dr. Sorokin to get to know each other better.
